More information on A Counterpoint of Tolerance
A Counterpoint of Tolerance is directed by lead composer David Rosenboom. David is a composer, performer, conductor, interdisciplinary artist, author and educator. He has explored ideas in his work about the spontaneous evolution of forms, languages for improvisation, new techniques in scoring for ensembles, cross-cultural collaborations, performance art, computer music systems, interactive multi-media, compositional algorithms, and extended musical interface with the human nervous system since the 1960's. His work is widely distributed and presented around the world and he is known as a pioneer in American experimental music. David is Dean of the School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts, where he also holds the Richard Seaver Distinguished Chair in Music, and is a conductor with the New Century Players.

More information about David can be found at his website:
http://music.calarts.edu/~david/.

You can also see and hear him speak about being a
composer/performer and about CalArts in video clips at:

This project will take place over the course of two years. It begins with the chosen composer/performers meeting with David on the campus of Idyllwild Arts for a retreat from July 20th to August 2nd, 2008. Composer/performers will then return to their native countries for a year of creative composing with compatible software and computers in order to collaborate and communicate via the internet. In the summer of 2009 the composer/performers will complete their year’s collaborative effort at a 2-week workshop back in Idyllwild. The workshop will result in an extraordinary, new music composition reflecting the cultural diversity of the composers, the common language of music, and how the arts address the conditions of the world today. The second summer will culminate in a public concert, with all composer/performers taking part in the performance. TAC has plans for additional performances of the composition at international venues.

We are looking for talented young composer/performers, 16 to 28
years of age. Applicants must be composer/performers. Composer/performers will be selected for their musical ability and imagination. Skill in improvisation and evidence of developing an original, creative voice in music are important. We are looking for composer/performers who can achieve a high level of expression, will commit to maintaining serious focus over the course of the project, and will bring with them a creative way to express their own unique culture while collaborating with composer/performers from other diverse cultures. All meetings and communication will be in English, so a proficiency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite.
