Ceramics: Soft vs. Hard – Handbuilding with Slabs for Surface

Learn tips and tricks to elevate handbuilding with slabs. Explore various types of molds including hump, slump and ring molds to break free from working in the round and experiment with templates and hard slabs for free-form construction. Challenge yourself to make dynamic forms unique to your individual aesthetic, including plates and boxes.
Explore how these consistent construction methods offer you the opportunity to treat your clay as canvas and add interesting surfaces with underglaze techniques. Class discussions, optional readings and personal reflection activities will guide your creativity and enhance your abilities to harmonize form with surface.
Instruction will be a blend of live demonstrations on Zoom and recorded in-class tutorials. Optional weekly assignments give you the chance to connect one-on-one with other participants from class and exchange peer feedback. Share ideas, pieces in process and other resources through the class Padlet resource board. While previous experience in clay will be helpful, this class is open to all levels.
