ESL & Art Intensive (Online)

Students spend four weeks online in an interactive, comprehensive, and accelerated English language program that combines creativity with serious academic learning.

This course understands that real language progression takes place when students are exposed to language in multiple contexts and situations. Our program combines English language instruction with visual arts and real-time chats with native-speaking peers. Our main purpose is to get non-native English speakers exploring their linguistic and artistic sides, whether or not they identify as artists.

All courses are taught by experienced and expert arts and academic teachers. In both formal and informal settings, students are immersed in an English-speaking environment with teenagers from around the world. 

By the end of the four-week course, students will have more confidence in their English language abilities, enjoy global friendships, and possess artistic skills to help them realize their passions and creative potential. 

This Intensive Four-Week English and Arts Program:

  • Emphasizes academic language skills AND basic interpersonal communication
  • Uses both academics and arts to increase proficiency in the four main language skill areas – listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Helps students foster relationships with teachers and ambassadors* who can provide social and linguistic support during the program and beyond
  • Builds confidence and comfort with verbal communication and articulation
  • Is taught by experienced Idyllwild Arts Academy ESL and Arts faculty
  • Promotes seamless transition to the regular Academy year at Idyllwild Arts
  • Provides thorough assessment to ensure correct English level placement
  • Improves chances of success and promotion to subsequent levels
  • Includes time management support to encourage good study habits before the Academy year begins

*Students or adults who speak English at the Advanced level or above

What sets our program apart?

With a wealth of experience teaching English, we know that language acquisition is most successful when learners gain confidence in themselves and have fun in the process. The key to such success is getting students to think critically and engage artistically with a variety of stress-free platforms that foster community, allowing you, the English Language Learner, to get one step closer to fluency.

Weekly Class Schedule

The schedule below represents time as Pacific Standard Time (PST), and runs Sunday through Thursday each week.

6pm-6:30pm – Office Hours (with English teachers – follow up from homework and previous day’s lesson)

7:00pm-8:00pm – English Lesson 

8:30pm-9:30pm – Art Lesson (Visual Arts)

10:00pm-10:30pm – Ambassador Program (chats and games)

The schedule below represents time as China Standard Time (CST), and runs Monday through Friday each week.  

9am-9:30am – Office Hours (with English teachers – follow up from homework and previous day’s lesson)

10am-11am – English Lesson 

11:30pm-12:30pm – Art Lesson (Visual Arts)

1pm-1:30pm – Ambassador Program (chats and games)

  • Good internet connection 
  • Any electronic device that has access to the internet (phone, tablet, computer, iPod, etc.) 
  • Make sure your device is charged before class begins
  • A personal email address for us to send you the zoom links to access the class
  • A list of other materials for the Art component of the class will be sent to you at least a month before the program starts.

What is the process for evaluating my child’s English level?

Our ESL & Arts 4-week Summer Intensive is targeted at Beginner and Intermediate level students. We conduct online interviews with all students applying to determine their level before they arrive. The online assessment looks at all skill areas – listening, speaking, reading and writing – as well as grammar and vocabulary. Spaces for this program are limited and priority is given to those students who are applying to the Academy for the new academic year.

Kelly Kent-Stoll is a full-time ESL teacher and resident dorm parent at Idyllwild Arts Academy, having previously done extensive work as a private tutor. She holds a Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from California State University, Los Angeles. During three different summers she has done volunteer development work in the East African nation of Tanzania. She loves music, cooking, fashion, and almost everything about her Pomeranian puppy, Charlie (and she swiftly forgives the things she does not love).

Daniel Orozco is the Spanish teacher for Idyllwild Arts Academy and brings his most recent teaching experience from working with charter schools in San Jacinto, CA. Daniel has lived in Spain and Italy, working with youth in summer camps and language immersion programs, and is fluent in Spanish, English, Italian, and Galician. Daniel also has experience as a freelance reporter and is excited to share his unique combination of experience. He is an avid fan of soccer, and has played internationally. 

Cihan Sesen is a Turkish American author and illustrator. His work is primarily sequential art that is focused on telling something important about how we all live, often from the point of view of an outsider. Cihan has published illustrations at Apple Inc, and exhibited digital art at Pacific Art League. He published the comic series Carny Trash at Sideshow Media Group, and self-published Loose Ends, Spine, Stop The Rain and Merry Go Round. Cihan graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from San Francisco Art Institute. Currently, he is teaching Drawing, Animation, Comics and Digital Illustration at Idyllwild Arts Academy. Originally born in Istanbul, he migrated to the United States as a teenager and speaks Turkish and English fluently.

Leah Bosworth

Director, ESL & Arts Summer Intensive

Leah Bosworth has worked as an ESL Instructor and Dorm Parent at Idyllwild Arts Academy since 2012. She is currently the Chair of the ESL Department. In addition to her current position, Leah has taught in Northern Cyprus, Morocco, the UK, and Turkey. Leah has a BSc. from Plymouth University, UK, and holds a ‘Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages’ as well as a ‘Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults’. Her academic interests include course design, writing support, and promoting autonomous learners. Leah is the co-editor and co-author of the publication ‘A Practical Guide to English Language Curriculum Development in an Academic Context: Creating, Vitalizing, and Evaluating’, published by Black Swan in 2013. She has also presented papers at various conferences around the world, including Turkey, the UK, Northern Cyprus, Oman, and most recently Austin, Texas.
