ESL & Art Intensive

Combine English, art, theatre, dance, and nature in this immersive English as a Second Language and Arts experience. Immerse yourself in an English-speaking environment and explore a variety of visual and performing arts while meeting teenagers from other countries and cultures. Speak, play, interact, and make art together in a natural and enjoyable way.

In this intensive, you will develop the core language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as artistic skills to help you pursue your artistic passions. You will work as a team with our experienced, enthusiastic teachers and progress, improve your confidence, and nurture your creative, playful spirit.

What is the process for evaluating my child’s English level?

Our ESL & Arts 4-week Summer Intensive is targeted at Beginner and Intermediate level students. We conduct online interviews with all students applying to determine their level before they arrive. The online assessment looks at all skill areas – listening, speaking, reading and writing – as well as grammar and vocabulary. Spaces for this program are limited and priority is given to those students who are applying to the Academy for the new academic year.

Clothing & Footwear:

As we are located in the mountains, temperatures can vary widely. Daytime temperatures can be anywhere from 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 33 degrees celsius), while evening temperatures can drop down between 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 15 degrees celsius). Our campus has some paved paths and a lot of dirt paths. Students will be walking regularly, both on-campus and off-campus, during excursions.

Daytime: shorts, skirts, t-shirts and tank tops (and a swimsuit for trips and swimming pool on campus)

Evenings: jeans, long pants, socks, long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters/jackets, and hoodies

Footwear: comfortable walking shoes, sandals, tennis shoes, etc.

Dorm Room:

  • Electricity adapter/converter plug
  • Small fan
  • Bedding – pillow and pillowcase; sheets (twin size – extra long); blanket/quilt/comforter

Students will not be able to use their student accounts during the summer, so they should have a bank card or credit card to use during the 4-week program. There is an ATM on campus next to the bookstore and one in the town of Idyllwild.

Students may NOT bring:

  • Weapons
  • Candles or Incense
  • Pets
  • Gaming systems e.g.X-Box, Nintendo Switch

  • Computer monitors larger than 24 inches

Note to Parents: We will arrange a shopping trip on the first Sunday so students may purchase anything else they need.

A day in the life of the ESL & Arts Summer Intensive starts with a morning program of English skill development, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as grammar and vocabulary expansion.  Following lunch, the afternoon program of visual and performance art begins. Students enjoy some free time before dinner where they meet their peers  for further social time and encouragement with their verbal communication.  There is one hour allocated per night for ‘room study’ where students complete their homework or prepare for the next day of classes.  Following room study, it’s time for some more fun with various dorm games and activities.  Once/twice a week, academics and arts are set aside so students can experience full language immersion in excursions off campus. Past trips have included cooking classes and kayaking.

Kelly Kent-Stoll is a full-time ESL teacher and resident dorm parent at Idyllwild Arts Academy, having previously done extensive work as a private tutor.
