Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim | Book by James Lapine
Step into the enchanted—and emotionally resonant—world of Into the Woods, a timeless musical that explores what happens after “happily ever after.” With its complex score and deep themes, Into the Woods is a beloved but notoriously difficult production to stage—making it the perfect challenge for IAA’s passionate and dedicated students.
Thanks to the leadership of IAA Music Director Jeff Bell, our student pit orchestra will perform live from the wings in this very special production, continuing the high standards set in last year’s Cabaret. Since joining the department, Music Director Jeff Bell has transformed the way we produce musicals. A graduate of Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University, Jeff brings a wealth of professional experience to our campus, and this production is a shining example of his impact. Jeff’s commitment to live performance and student growth has helped make this ambitious production not only possible, but truly extraordinary.
This show also highlights the power of interdisciplinary collaboration at IAA. Directed by Dramatic Arts Department Chair Denis McCourt Stryjewski, choreographed by Dance faculty member Jonathan Sharp, and featuring musical contributions from faculty and students alike—including IAA Associate Laurel Owen on French horn and Director of Orchestras Dr. Dan Bassin on trumpet—Into the Woods is a truly cross-departmental effort. With nearly 28 cast members (representing three-quarters of the Musical Theatre program), the production showcases the depth of vocal and dramatic talent in the department.
This is more than just a high school musical—it’s a testament to what happens when exceptional talent meets expert guidance. As the show reminds us: Children will listen. And at IAA, they also rise to the challenge.
