Students will dive into the world of filmmaking through hands-on technical training, an exploration of key movements in film history, and an inside look at the roles that bring a production to life. Mirroring the collaborative energy of a real-world film set, this immersive workshop offers an authentic introduction to the creative process. By the end, each participant will have developed a fully realized concept or short digital media project and walk away with a solid foundation of filmmaking skills. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your craft, this workshop is a fun, inspiring gateway into the art of film—powered by the renowned education of Idyllwild Arts Academy.
Below is a list of practical materials and resources you’ll need to have for our in-person program:

Student participants have the opportunity to stay with current Academy Students in our dorms. Students will have their own bed and will share an ensuite restroom with two other students. Filmmaker, educator, and activist Catalina Alcaraz-Guzman opened her own professional photography studio in Medellin, Colombia, at just sixteen. A passionate community leader and cultural organizer, she used film, theater, and mass media to address Colombia’s social unrest in the 1990s. After earning degrees in photography, TV production, and journalism, she moved to the U.S. to pursue filmmaking, completing a BFA in Communication from Castleton State University and an MFA in Film & Television from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her early work included roles with 22 Whitestone in New York, an Artist-in-Residence position at Reel Works mentoring underserved youth, and a key creative role at Poverty Row Entertainment on a feature film about Hollywood icon Mary Pickford.Catalina later served as Film Commission Manager for the Savannah Regional Film Commission before joining Idyllwild Arts Academy in 2019, where she now chairs the Film & Digital Media Department and leads the school’s DEIB Collaborative. She continues to bridge her creative work and advocacy, directing theatrical films in Medellin and presenting in masterclasses across South America. Her documentary contributions include Birdsong & Coffee: A Wake Up Call, and her debut feature film #Medellin1995 is currently in development.
