Repetition in Form
Discover how to create tableware by blending wheel throwing, slabs, and bisque mold-making techniques, mastering consistency and precision in every form.
Drawing and painting on a plaster slab using underglazes, we will explore image transfer techniques upon a slab of clay. The result will be placed into a plaster cavity in an open book mold that we will create first.

Gain a solid introduction to the world of poetic imagery and the realm of duality. Through the methods of monoprinting with underglazes on plaster surface and transferring to clay slabs, students will first learn various painting techniques like “Doin’ The Rembrandt” and “Instant Fresco”. Then, using the format of the “open book”, the class will create “pages” on sculptural forms. Finally, the realm of duality—the subject of poetic art versus the prose, as well as general ways-of-thinking—will be explored and studied through slide lectures and hands-on demonstrations. This week-long workshop is one part plaster mold making, one part printmaking, with a cumulative focus on the presentation of art ideas. Students should have a basic comfort with the clay material and a working ability to paint and draw. The final result of the class will be at least one ceramic open book with mono-printed pages facing outward, once fired to cone 2 bisque, as well as various examples of the usage of the monoprinted clay slab.
