Exploring Acrylic Painting
Jessie Dodington
July 6 – 10
Five-day session
Acrylic is the perfect medium for working intuitively and spontaneously, as well as to practice observational art. This workshop covers a range of acrylic painting techniques, from thin watercolor-like application to thick impasto using brushes, palette knives and other tools. Exercises include color-palette investigations, monochromatic and full-color studies, still-life painting, landscape painting, working from photographic resources, and abstract experimentation. Inspiration will be gleaned from the surrounding nature, poems, online sources, photographs, and your imagination.
Experiment, play, and make recipes for color-mixing, mark-making and compositions in a sketchbook that will become your technical and creative reference book. You will complete studies and finished pieces on different surfaces: mixed-media sketchbook, acrylic paper, and canvas board.
There will be plenty of creative prompts and technical demos if you prefer more direction, and lots of flexibility if you prefer to work more independently. You will leave this workshop having developed a reference and creative process sketchbook, paint studies that can be turned into larger pieces, and finished works of art. Whether you are brand new to painting or more experienced, this will be a creatively liberating and inspirational week.
The course will be organized into five days, each with quick exercises, more in-depth assignments and larger projects. There will be pre-recorded demos, live viewings with questions and discussion, as well as live Zoom painting sessions as a group. Work will be posted in a group gallery for written comments and critique.
