Acting for the Camera Intensive

This three-week practical course for seasoned and beginning actors is an intensive and fun experience both in front of and behind the camera. You will learn the intimate nature of acting on camera (versus stage) and the demands of film and TV production on the actor.
The course begins with taping prepared monologues, which faculty will critique. Then you will learn to use relaxation and imagination exercises as well as improvisation techniques to prepare to shoot scenes. Faculty will guide you toward the realistic acting style required by the truth and intimacy of the close-up lens. You will explore how to use script analysis, beats, actions, and character development. You will use these techniques when auditioning for a student-directed short films and scenes, which will be shot on a professional sound stage.
This intensive is taught with the Filmmaking Intensive. Film students will work with you to develop scene and character interpretations for their short films. Topics also will include style and genre. Invite your friends and family to see you on the big screen at the culmination.

Avid Film Editing Intensive

Includes option to test for Avid Media Composer Certification
Ages 14-18

Culmination: Student Film Clips Screening
Saturday, July 8, 11 a.m.

Learn how to edit films with Avid Media Composer Software, including the option to take the official Avid certification exam at the end of the two-week course. In this intensive workshop, you will gain a fundamental understanding of Avid Media Composer and the core skills, workflows, and concepts of non-linear editing on the Avid system. The course is designed to unlock the power of post-production in your own films and shorts.

Among other things you will learn:

• How to create projects
• Create titles
• Problem-solve and manage media
• Edit materials larger than HD (2K, 4K, etc…)
• Create multi-layer effects
• Save and output your work

No previous experience with Avid Media Composer is necessary, but a working knowledge of Mac or PC computers is essential. You may take a test at the end of the intensive to receive official accreditation from Avid.

Computer Animation Intensive: Giving Pixels Life

Animation means “bringing to life,” and it’s exactly what animators do – whether it’s exploring deep space, creating video game universes or revealing intimate aspects of nature. Disney artists called animation the “Illusion of Life;” and it’s been crafted and refined by imaginative artists at studios such as Pixar, Dreamworks and Warner Brothers.

This immersive workshop is for anyone who wants to start animating, as well as gain foundational skills for future work in animation, film and video, games, or the web. No prior experience is needed. You will start animating on the first day and explore the art of animation by using Adobe Flash to create art and characters. You’ll quickly master the computer’s tools for designing and animating scene elements, characters and effects. You’ll learn essential techniques and tricks that master studio animators have cultivated and examine how to apply them to your work. Every day you’ll be developing your own methods and style while exploring storytelling, movement, sketches and gesture drawing. You also will create a portfolio that incorporates your artwork, action studies, and reference materials along with your digital creations.

Filmmaking Intensive: Short Films from Script to Screen

Ages 14-18

Designed for high school-aged artists passionate about making films. Using a state-of-the-art soundstage, film-based lighting and grip equipment, HD digital cameras and editing suites, you will make short digital films, from script through completion. In this intensive four-week workshop, a team of instructors with industry experience and credits will teach you learn techniques of visual storytelling, and the importance of the creative collaboration between the writer, director, cinematographer, editor and actor.

In week one, you will focus on story and screenwriting. In week two, you will learn proper camera, sound, directing and crewing skills. In week three, up to four films will be “greenlit” for production, and you will help complete pre-production planning, cast actors from our acting program and work in several crew positions. In week four, you will edit, score, and add visual effects. Films will be screened on the last day of classes, and you will receive a download link of the films. Projects produced in this program have won a number of awards at major film festivals.

Live Sound and Audio Recording Intensive

If you’re interested in a career in music or media arts, you will need a fundamental understanding of music technology (microphones, mixing consoles, digital audio, loudspeaker systems, etc…). To have at least a cursory knowledge in live sound reinforcement and recording is to be prepared to navigate the technological landscape in which today’s artists must exist.

This intensive will teach you the about the fundamentals of live sound, audio recording and related topics, and offer you practical experience capturing solo and large ensemble performances. Open to students at any experience level, this intensive is designed to build an understanding and experience from the ground up. You will learn fundamentals of sound, acoustics, microphones, analog and digital audio signal, loudspeaker systems, recording principles and basics of live sound reinforcement. You will have the opportunity to provide live sound support, record live concerts and practice learned skills throughout the week in collaboration with the summer music intensives running concurrently, including the songwriting and classical music programs.

Collaborative Filmmaking for Junior Artists

Are you the next Martin Scorsese? Filmmaking is a powerful but challenging art form. How do you tell your story, organize your shoot, manage your technology, and work with others? In this workshop, you will create and collaborate with your peers, using teamwork to get the job done. The program is ideal for the beginner or the experienced student.

You will start at your own level and find new ways to push your skills forward. Your filmmaking team will create, plan and storyboard your own short films. Everyone will perform all acting and film crew roles, so you can experience the full process, both in front of and behind the camera. You will learn camera framing, directing and introductory editing, and get hands-on experience with digital cameras and basic editing instruction on iMovie. The workshop ends with the world premiere of the finished products, which you will get to take home on a DVD.

FUNdamentals of Filmmaking

Have you ever wanted to make a movie? With technological advances, you might already have the “point-and-shoot” tools you need, but how do you tell the story?

Learn the basic foundations of cinematic storytelling. Through various exercises, you create, plan and storyboard your own short films. Fellow students will perform all roles of a film crew, including acting, so everyone can experience the full process, both in front of and behind the camera. Camera framing, directing and introductory editing will be included. This workshop will give you hands-on experience with digital cameras and basic editing instruction on iMovie, as well as a bit of history of the cameras and moving pictures. The workshop ends with the world premiere of the finished products, which you will get to take home on a DVD.
