Campus Safety
The Campus Safety Program is unique to the Idyllwild Arts campus, providing proactive campus safety patrols day and night to ensure a safe environment for the students, guests, and employees. With such comprehensive coverage, it is unique among public, private, and boarding schools. Under the direction of Fire Chief Dave Marks, the Campus Safety Program is run and operated by a contracted state-recognized fire and security agency that has been providing onsite emergency services to public and private communities nationwide for 30 years.
Emergency Response Team
The Emergency Response Team (ERT) is a full-time crew (24/7) of state-licensed and certified First Responders. The crew members each hold the multi-role status of Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician/Security Personnel.
As first responders to all safety incidents on campus, the team augments local emergency response agencies with an average response time of 3 minutes. The team is solely responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment.
ERT Personnel is experienced in wildfire mitigation and is assigned routine projects from establishing and maintaining defensible spaces and fuel breaks to facilities hardening for our buildings.
Emergency Response Center
The Emergency Response Center (ERC) is a newly renovated 1900 Sq. Ft. Firehouse at the front of campus, where the crew lives when on shift. The facility has a full kitchen and eating/break room, two private sleeping quarters, a shower and bathroom, a training room, and a front office with intake capabilities for walk-in emergencies. The ERC also houses the IAF fire truck, apparatus, and emergency response gear.
The ERC has established partnerships with local law enforcement, emergency services, and cooperating agencies to provide a clear understanding of our campus safety initiatives and protocols. The ERC is a partner with all cooperating agencies.
Safety & Security Preparedness
The Campus Safety Program is unique to the Idyllwild Arts campus, providing proactive campus safety patrols day and night. These patrols address incidents promptly, enforce regulations, and ensure compliance. The safety patrols ensure that only authorized persons are on campus and that students and staff are kept safe. The Emergency Response Team works closely with IA Campus Ambassadors to maintain security. The program focuses on preparing for various emergencies, such as natural or manmade disasters, medical crises, security threats, and fire suppression responses. Students and staff receive training through campus emergency drills and emergency communication protocols in which the ERT responds to all issues. The Campus Safety program provides proactive safety patrols using crime and fire prevention/inspection tactics along with emergency Preparedness and Emergency Response.
Safety Escorts
The ERT and Campus Ambassadors provide safety escorts upon request during late hours to accompany students and staff to their destinations. A 24/7 administrator on duty (AOD) will readily respond to any health and safety concerns.
Risk Assessment
Weekly site assessments identify vulnerabilities and potential campus
hazards. Daily safety inspections identify and address any issues found to maintain a safe environment. Fire and Crime mitigation plans and services are a part of our prevention services.
Communication & Action Plans
The Campus Safety Program uses the Titan HST system to communicate concerns, threats, or emergencies. All students and employees must have this application and be trained in using this system. This system provides timely alerts, notifications, and updates, which are critical to all persons on the campus. Regular communication campaigns educate the campus community about safety practices, reporting procedures, and available resources.
Prevention & Awareness
The Campus Safety Program aims to prevent unsafe and unwanted activities by educating the community about safety measures, promoting awareness, and implementing preventive strategies for a safer learning environment. Extensive mandatory trainings for faculty and staff include CPR & First Aid, Mandated Reporter, Suicide Prevention, and Workplace Harassment.
The Campus Safety Program builds positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and local stakeholders. Trust and collaboration enhance safety efforts and allow an open-door form of communication for persons who need or want concerns to be heard or addressed.
