Songwriting

The Idyllwild Arts Songwriting program was the first of its kind in the United States, and it remains a place where original voices are discovered, developed, and refined. Here, students learn to translate ideas into fully realized songs, shaping lyrics, melodies, and harmonies that reflect a sound uniquely their own while building a strong understanding of the music industry, from recording and production to marketing and business.

Philosophy

At Idyllwild Arts, songwriting is both a craft and a practice rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and creative courage. We believe great songs are built through exploration, revision, and a willingness to take risks. Our students develop their voices by working independently and alongside one another, shaping lyrics, melody, and music across genres while engaging every stage of the process, from first idea to live performance and studio production.

Our philosophy blends artistry with fluency in the tools of today’s industry. Through creative writing, musical study, and hands-on experience with recording, mixing, producing, and live sound, students gain the skills to fully realize their ideas. Private instruction and expanded study options support each songwriter’s individual path, empowering them to create with intention, versatility, and confidence.

Curriculum

The Songwriting curriculum at Idyllwild Arts is designed to cultivate both artistic voice and professional fluency. Students engage deeply in the creative process, generating, shaping, and refining original work while collaborating with peers and mentors in a dynamic, studio-centered environment. A suite of core classes invites them to flex their innovation muscles across a wide range of art forms, encouraging cross-disciplinary exploration and fresh creative perspective. This integrated approach equips young songwriters to create with confidence, versatility, and purpose.

The Songwriting major is housed within the Music Department. Students work closely with the Department Chair to shape a course pathway that supports their individual artistic goals. While all students engage in core offerings such as Introduction to Songwriting, Vocal Ensemble, Music Theory, and Private Lessons (Guitar or Piano), they may choose to deepen their focus through additional music coursework. Songwriting students also participate in Music Department seminars, practicums, and juries, and receive regular one-on-one mentorship as they develop their creative and professional trajectory.

Songwriting course offerings vary from year to year. Some current and past offerings include:

  • Creative Writing (InterArts & Creative Writing Dept.)
  • Vocal Ensemble
  • Songwriting Applied Performance
  • Songwriting Workshop
  • Melody and Lyrics
  • Vocal Styles
  • Music Business and Marketing (2 semesters)
  • Recording and Production I
  • Recording and Production II
  • …and more!

Opportunities

Songwriting majors have abundant opportunities to collaborate with their peers and share original work in performances on and off campus throughout the year, including concerts, recitals, and special showcases. Recent highlights include student performances of original music at the GRAMMY Museum, where our young artists brought their songs to a live Los Angeles audience. Students also perform alongside renowned visiting artists, gaining meaningful, real-world experience.

Songwriting students learn directly from accomplished, working artists through masterclasses, residencies, and visiting artist collaborations that connect the classroom to the professional world. Recent guests have included Studio 45B collaborators Grady James and Danielle Todd, who brought their creative process into the studio and worked closely with students on developing original material. Students have also learned first-hand from innovative guitarist Yvette Young, whom Rolling Stone named the 155th greatest guitarist of all time, offering insight into artistry, technique, and carving out a distinct voice in today’s music landscape. These experiences provide students with direct mentorship, professional perspective, and a clear view of what it means to sustain a creative life in music.

Beyond the music program, Idyllwild Arts songwriters contribute to a vibrant culture of collaboration across campus, performing live for the Dramatic Arts Department and creating original scores and compositions in partnership with the Film Department. These interdisciplinary experiences expand their creative range and reflect the connected spirit of our artistic community.
