Alumni-Led Arts Classes

Silk Painting with Rachel Welch

Create a one of a kind painted silk scarf! Silk painting is like a combination of watercolor and batik, working with a resist and dyes that flow on the material to create amazing creations. The scarves are then steamed to set the dye and they become beautiful, wearable pieces of art. This is a relaxing class that can be enjoyed by all. You do not need to have prior painting experience to create a beautiful piece. 

Rachel Welch graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, receiving a degree in Art and Design with a concentration in Studio Arts. She spent a year at the Accademia Di Belle Arte in Florence, Italy, studying sculpture and drawing. She received the title of Artist of the Year for the Art Alliance of Idyllwild in 2009 and Artist of the Year for Hemet Valley Art Association in 2023. She teaches painting and drawing at Idyllwild Arts. Her artwork has been shown in California as well as in Italy.

Photography with Brandon Riley Miller

A brief introduction to photography, the basic operations of modern digital SLR/mirrorless cameras, and how these fundamentals can be applied to everyday photographs taken on smartphones.

Brandon Riley Miller is an alumni of the Film & Digital Media department at Idyllwild Arts graduating in 2005. A filmmaker first, he began to take photography more seriously after studying the medium more intensively at Idyllwild Arts. The still image allowed an immediacy and sometimes instant satisfaction that filmmaking rarely allows with its labor intensive process. He is constantly experimenting with both digital and analog formats, portraiture and street photography being the most prolific areas of his photography.
