“The Laramie Project” is a play based on the aftermath of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man, in Laramie, Wyoming. The Tectonic Theater Project interviewed over 200 residents of Laramie over a year and a half, and the play uses their words to explore the community’s reactions and the impact of the hate crime. The play delves into the depths of human behavior, showcasing both the capacity for hatred and the potential for empathy and love. Decades later, Matthew Shepard’s story continues to resonate, urging society to confront the consequences of bullying and hate. “The Laramie Project” uses a documentary-style approach, incorporating actual interviews, journal entries, and news reports. This unique Idyllwild Arts production also incorporates live musical performances.
