Hopi Silver Overlay

Overview

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into the world of Hopi-inspired silver overlay designs. These designs, created using multiple sheets (layers) of silver with hand-cut-out designs, are a testament to the hands-on nature of this craft. The layers are textured, and recessed layers are oxidized, creating a unique contrast in silverwork. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to complete at least two small to medium works of art, such as a bracelet, ring, pendant, belt buckle, or a small pair of earrings. With close instruction, this workshop is well-suited for all levels of students. Ronald, your instructor, will guide you through the evolution of styles from traditional to contemporary, and you are encouraged to draw inspiration from his stories and insights or your own ideas, insights, and experiences.

The uniqueness of this workshop lies in its teaching through the Hopi worldview and personal artistic journey of renowned Hopi silversmith Ronald Wadsworth. This style of silver jewelry making originated in 1938 from drawings produced at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Later, Fred Kabotie (Hopi), a noted former Idyllwild Arts faculty member, taught this technique for World War II veterans’ classes held from 1947 to 1951 in Arizona. Ronald Wadsworth continues this legacy of teaching to this day.

Note: This workshop will cover several techniques in silversmithing. You will be encouraged to start two pieces and focus entirely on finishing at least one to take home at the end of the week.

Beginners: Learn about silversmithing’s primary materials, processes, and techniques.

Intermediate/Advanced: If you have some experience, you will fine-tune your skills while mastering new techniques and designs.
