The Joy of Art

10 – 13*

This week-long program is designed to introduce students to new, bold, and unconventional ways of creating three-dimensional art. Young artists will discover the joy of making one-of-a-kind designs, exploring their creativity through texture, form, and imagination.

*This is a Junior Artists program and will follow those guidelines outlined in our FAQ section.

Overview

Join us for a week-long workshop filled with creativity and exploration as young artists dive into fun and exciting hands-on projects using a wide variety of tactile and 3D materials. Projects may include textile art, mosaics, ceramics, collage, printmaking and up-cycling – with plenty more surprises throughout the week! No prior art experience needed – just a love for trying new things and getting creative. The week will end with an art show on Friday afternoon where students will proudly exhibit their beautiful creations. They are sure to walk away having experienced “The Joy of Art!”

*The final culmination is Friday afternoon, with Saturday being a move-out day for residential students.

Additional Information

Our Visual Arts classes do not require any type of assessment or portfolio to get into the program. Instructors will work with your child at the level that they are at. Your child will improve and learn new skills whether they are a beginner or have been an artist for years.

-A refillable water bottle
-Comfortable clothes that can get messy
-Sturdy closed-toed shoes

Phones and other electronic devices are not allowed during class time in Children’s Center. Day students should not bring a personal device. Residential students should leave devices in their dorm room, or will turn in their device to the teacher during instructional time.

Your student will be following this basic schedule each weekday:

Day students should be dropped off at Children’s Center between 8:15 – 8:25 am
(breakfast is not included for day students)

Residential Students will be walked to breakfast as a group and then to Children’s Center

8:30 am: Morning Sing/Greeting
9:00 am – 11:20 am: Morning Classes (snack provided)
11:30 am – 12:15 pm: Lunch in the Dining Hall (provided for residential and day students)
12:30 pm – 3:45 pm: Afternoon Classes (snack provided)

Day students should be picked up from Children’s Center at 4:00 pm.

Residential students will be walked as a group to afternoon activities with the RA’s.

Day students will be allowed to use the pool on Tuesday – Friday from 4:00 – 5:45 pm with the supervision of a parent or guardian. (Enrolled children only, please. No siblings or friends.) Lifeguards will be present.

Cat Orlando earned an arts degree with an emphasis in three-dimensional design. She’s been teaching bearmaking during Idyllwild Arts Family Week since 2000 and since 2006, she has taught art, drama, movement and design during the Summer Program in Children’s Center. She is the President of F.A.M.E., a non-profit group that raises funds to assist children who want to take classes in the arts and she has been the Director/Instructor for her dance company called “On Your Feet” dance productions since 1998. She absolutely loves teaching young ones as they discover joy in their creative process, in all genres of art. Her motto: “In art, we don’t make mistakes, we create originals!” www.onyourfeet.info.

Instructor: James Johnson (Tlingit) This workshop will introduce you to and get you started on your journey to make a Northwest Coast inspired rowing paddle utilizing methods, techniques and philosophies rooted in Tlingit culture. This intensive learning experience will highlight wood carving techniques and Northwest Coast line-drawing traditions.

Summer

ELL & Arts

13 – 17*

This two-week program builds English proficiency through creative work and collaborative projects. Students strengthen their language skills in small classes with individualized attention, opportunities for self-expression, and general connection through the arts. Mornings focus on English in use; afternoons invite students to apply their knowledge through visual and performing arts, discussion and reflection. *This is a Teen program and will follow those guidelines outlined in our FAQ section.
