A Celebration of Life Concert for Dr. Douglas Ashcraft
William M. Lowman Concert Hall
Join us for a performance of music faculty member Alex McLaughlin’s album A Brand New State! This concert is free and open to the public as a part of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program’s Jazz in the Pines Student Clinic, and will feature our outstanding Summer Program faculty including Grammy Award Winner John Daversa (trumpet), Jeremy Siskind (piano), Dave Tull (drums), and Alex McLaughlin (bass).
Vinyl records of A Brand New State will be available for purchase at the show. Produced by Grammy Award winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. and featuring jazz master Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, McLaughlin’s debut is described as “some of the most deliciously dynamic jazz you’ve ever listened to” (Contemporary Fusion Reviews by Dick Metcalf). A modern artist who is equal parts musician, composer, and educator, Alex’s voice on the double bass distills his upbringing in both the jazz lineage as well as his rooted study of the European classical canon. The album offers a series of musical vignettes, thematically reflecting on harnessing the power of change: taking advantage of the right moment or signal to progress, and using the hardship of life as a means to define our character in constructive directions.
