Students interested in learning more about the Academy will have an opportunity to explore this program in a short summer session. This workshop is designed for young and emerging filmmakers eager to explore the essentials of storytelling through film. Through a combination of film history, hands-on creative development, and technical instruction, participants will dive into the key elements of filmmaking: story, image, and sound. You’ll develop your own short film idea while learning the basics of camera work, composition, continuity, lighting, sound design, and editing. This workshop mirrors the collaborative and exploratory environment of a real-world film set—all from the comfort of your home.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have conceptualized and pre-visualized a short digital media project and gained a solid toolkit of foundational skills. Along the way, you’ll explore major film history movements, discover the roles within a production team, and connect with like-minded peers who share your passion for visual storytelling. Whether you’re just beginning your filmmaking journey or looking to sharpen your creative process, this workshop offers an inspiring and supportive entry point—powered by the unique arts education of Idyllwild Arts Academy.

Filmmaker, educator, and activist Catalina Alcaraz-Guzman opened her own professional photography studio in Medellin, Colombia, at just sixteen. A passionate community leader and cultural organizer, she used film, theater, and mass media to address Colombia’s social unrest in the 1990s. After earning degrees in photography, TV production, and journalism, she moved to the U.S. to pursue filmmaking, completing a BFA in Communication from Castleton State University and an MFA in Film & Television from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her early work included roles with 22 Whitestone in New York, an Artist-in-Residence position at Reel Works mentoring underserved youth, and a key creative role at Poverty Row Entertainment on a feature film about Hollywood icon Mary Pickford.
