In this one-of-a-kind workshop, you will be fully involved in creating a “Paper Clip” chain bracelet or necklace. The reference to paperclips is a nod to the chain links’ unique shape, which resembles the time-old office supply!
The workshop will commence with an overview of safety protocols, including requiring you to wear closed-toed shoes and have your hair pulled back and out of the way. Then, you will design the size and shape of your chains and decide if you would like to create a bracelet or necklace (time permitting). You will learn the fundamentals of assembling a bracelet (or necklace) chain by hand and finishing the chain with a clasp. Additional skills you will learn and refine are how to saw, file, solder, buff, and polish silver to create your bespoke work of art.
Your instructor will meet you at any level of experience and also assist in advancing students’ established skills. This workshop is ideal for those with sturdy hands who can work on finely detailed silver work.
Norma Rodriguez started her jewelry career in 2018, quickly learning the ropes of her newly found passion. Her jewelry-making education is organic, beginning with an apprenticeship under Jay Whaley Studios. Under this apprenticeship, Norma dove deeply into the craft of jewelry fabrication and lost wax casting.
Norma now spends well over 40 hours a week working with her students at her jewelry school in San Diego, where both hobbyists and fellow jewelers come to perfect their skills and their ideas in physical metal form. These uniquely designed workshops help folks of all levels gain confidence in jewelry fabrication. One favorite class of Norma’s is a private wedding ring workshop where she helps couples create wedding bands for their special day.
Apart from teaching, Norma has her own personal brand called HIPOLITO. This newly established brand of personally made jewelry allows Norma to make her customers’ jewelry dreams come true.

Explore the uniquely classic Hopi technique of silver overlay metalsmithing. Silver overlay, as a technique for conveying traditional Hopi designs in silver, originated in 1938 from drawings produced at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Later, Fred Kabotie (Hopi), a noted former Idyllwild Arts faculty, taught this technique for World War II veterans' classes held from 1947-1951 in Arizona.
