Ramson Lomatewama is a glass artist, the first and only full-time Hopi glassblower, Katsina doll carver, published poet, and jeweler from Hotevilla, AZ, on the Hopi Reservation. He earned his BA from Goddard College in Plainfield, VT, in 1981. Ramson has taught various workshops and courses in the US and Japan and served as an adjunct professor of sociology at North Central College in Naperville, IL. Although Hopi ceremonies and cultural activities play a significant role in his life, Ramson continues to dedicate time to schools, universities, and museums as a visiting scholar and artist. Ramson teaches glass art for the Hopitutuqayki (The Hopi School), an arts apprenticeship program on the Hopi reservation.

Includes frit/colored glass, clear glass, use of all tools and supplies, propane; you will bring additional materials as outlined below.

Clothing should be cotton – no synthetics.
Cotton shirts (t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.) are acceptable.
Jeans or other cotton materials are suitable for pants.
Avoid clothing with applied logos or images, as that material tends to absorb heat.
No sandals or open-toed shoes allowed – leather boots recommended
Bring your favorite polarized eyewear
Water bottle

Seat cushion/pillow

Each day, your workshop starts at 9 am. Lunch is served from 12 pm to 1 pm. Workshops all recommence at 1 pm and wrap up at 4 pm. Dinner is served from 5 pm to 7 pm. NOTE: Some instructors allow for after-hour work sessions. If the instructor(s) is/are willing and present in the classroom, you can work on your pieces after 4 pm.

1) Native American Community Members, Leaders, Artists, and Teachers

For adults 18 and older with current tribal affiliation, the scholarship brings community leaders, artists, members, and teachers to workshops at Idyllwild Arts to benefit both the scholarship recipient and those in their schools or tribal communities. Applicants with financial needs may receive priority. We also offer scholarships for Native American Teens for both the Summer Program and the Academy.

Our Visual Arts classes do not require any type of assessment or portfolio to get into the program. Instructors will work with your child at the level that they are at. Your child will improve and learn new skills whether they are a beginner or have been an artist for years.

Mimi Caranci gained her inspiration and love for art at a very early age from her grandfather who was himself, an artist of many forms. The gift he gave her resulted in her love for photography, visual arts and jewelry making. Finding her most natural expression through art has been a formative journey that continues to grow. She finds special joy in teaching young ones how to express themselves through many forms of art!
